Visit the Intriguing and Quirky Town of Luderitz on a Private Tour

Luderitz on a private tour is intriguing due to this town being a bit quirky but quaint. Where it is located, it has the Namib Desert on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other.

Adolf Luderitz purchased the Angra Pequena and surrounding land in 1883 and hence the town of Luderitz was founded. It started as a guano harvesting town with fishing and had a trading post, but when diamonds were discovered in the nearby town of Kolmanskop in 1909, the town reaped the benefits of the new wealth in the area and the influx of more people.

The majority of the buildings in the town are of a German art nouveau architecture that is quite surreal. The best thing about this town is that little has changed in the last hundred years and you feel you are stepping back to the early 1900’s when you are here but only in looks and not facilities. It is a town that has lots to offer a tourist on sightseeing tours.

Sperrgebiet National Park
1 Take a safari tour to Sperrgebiet National Park which was off limits to the public for almost a hundred years until the Namibian government in 2008 declared it a national park. When you visit here, you are in for an adventure not just from what you see but from the fierce winds, flying grit and irregular temperatures. The undeveloped landscape is well worth an exploration.
Goerke Haus
2 On a guided tour of Goerke Haus in Luderitz, you will be surprised to see the scale of the building that blends into the rock face. It was built in 1910 as the home of Lieutenant Hans Goerke on Diamond Hill and its designer and architect was Otto Ertl. It is possibly the most extravagant mansions that was built during the diamond mining boom and an impressive to visit.
Luderitz Museum
3 Should you take a guided tour to Luderitz Museum, you are actually entering into Namibia’s oldest private museums. Due to the high German influence in the town of Luderitz, it is no surprise to learn that there is a large collection on the German colonial history here. There are also collections of artifacts to do with the towns local history, the diamond boom era and wildlife.
Shark Island
4 Take a sightseeing tour to Shark Island and see some spectacular views over the harbour, bay and town of Luderitz. A highlight of any tour to Shark Island is the possibility of seeing Seals and Pelicans that frequent the rocks around this area along with other wildlife species. There is a long history of this area that involves concentration camps and troubling times before the start of the diamond trade.
Felsenkirche
5 Felsenkirche is an Evangelical Lutheran church which was built in 1912. A guided tour of this church is very interesting and as an extra bonus, due to it being built high on Diamond Hill, the views are super of the town and sea. There is a stunning stain glassed panel over the altar that was given by Kaiser Wilhelm II and a bible which was a gift from his wife. The architecture has a Victorian influence.
Kolmanskop
6 Take a sightseeing tour to Kolmanskop the ghost town, a deserted town not a town with lots of ghosts near Luderitz. It was established after diamonds were discovered and many diamond miners settled here with their families. The majority of people were German and the town is built in a German architectural style. Once there were no diamonds left to be mined the townsfolk started to move until 1954 it was entirely deserted.
Bogenfels Arch
7 An interesting and enjoyable sightseeing tour to take is to see Bogenfels Arch. It is located in the centre of the Restricted Diamond area at the south Atlantic coast around 100 kilometres from Luderitz. This fascinating lime rock arch is 55 meters high and looks like a bridge. It is just amazing to see that the effects of climate and water can form such wonderful and unusual formations of rock.
Luderitz Boat Tours
8 Due to Luderitz being on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, there are lots of boat tours available from the harbour. There are short tours and day long tours where you get to relax all day in the sun (hopefully) while looking back at the view of the town and surrounding areas. Watch out for the dolphins, penguins, seals or whales. There is also fishing tours, ocean safari tours and romantic sunset tours.
