The 10 Day safari focuses on both comfort and a little adventure. The Namibia Camping Safari begins in Johannesburg and ends in Windhoek/Namibia. The Adventure Starts here!
Luderitz on a private tour is intriguing due to this town being a bit quirky but quaint. Where it is located, it has the Namib Desert on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other.
Adolf Luderitz purchased the Angra Pequena and surrounding land in 1883 and hence the town of Luderitz was founded. It started as a guano harvesting town with fishing and had a trading post, but when diamonds were discovered in the nearby town of Kolmanskop in 1909, the town reaped the benefits of the new wealth in the area and the influx of more people.
The majority of the buildings in the town are of a German art nouveau architecture that is quite surreal. The best thing about this town is that little has changed in the last hundred years and you feel you are stepping back to the early 1900’s when you are here but only in looks and not facilities. It is a town that has lots to offer a tourist on sightseeing tours.
There are lots of great tours to take when you are in or around the town of Luderitz. Go on sightseeing tours of the fabulously quirky architecture, take guided tours of the museum or lighthouse or go on a safari adventure tour in the Sperrgebiet National Park which is located adjacent to the town.
Sperrgebiet National Park was once the site of a diamond mining industry and is now one of the newest national parks in Namibia. It was left untouched for years and is a wild landscape to explore.
Another place to visit that is close to Luderitz is Shark Island. This is a Namibian coastal wildlife resort.
The busiest time of the year to visit Luderitz is the winter months from June to September, but due to where it is located it does not get a overrun as other nearby towns and cities. September to February there are lots of sunny days, but if there is a storm, it can be very fierce. The worst time to visit is from the end of December to the middle of February when the winds can be 60kph and dangerous.
Luderitz is a cheap destination to visit. It is possible to get a double room in a nice hotel fro less than US$50 with breakfast included. A lunch will cost around US$7 per person and a three-course evening meal in a mid-range restaurant will cost on average less than US$50 for two people. Sightseeing tours or private tours will vary in price in seasons but also they tend to vary between different tour operators.
Before traveling to Luderitz, research the town and the surrounding areas to find out when is the best time to travel. When visiting during peak season, it is advisable to book all accommodation and private tours well in advance. That way you are not disappointed if places or tours are booked out when you get there. Malaria medication is not needed when going to Luderitz but do take lots of mosquito repellant with you.
The climate in Luderitz is on average warm and temperate. The hottest month is July and the average temperature is around 18 degrees Celsius and the coldest month, January, has temperatures around 0 degrees Celsius. There is a good bit of rainfall at all times throughout the year. June is the wettest month and the driest month generally is February, but unfortunately, there is still a good amount of rainfall.
