Do you want to go walking around the historical sites on a chilly day rather than the sweltering heat? May and early June is a great time to visit as the summer heat hasn't fully started and given you time to explore the sites comfortably. The summer months July and August are ideal for the beach! Springtime is a lovely time but chilly however still a good time for trekking up the snow capped mountains.
My Holiday to Athens in 2016 cost us around 50 euros a day; this included entry into a few historical sites. Lunch, evening meal, and the various coffees {and the odd pastry! }Try and eat at the local cafes rather than the top restaurants as these work out expensive instead grab a pitta for lunch, cheap and delicious! If you do decide to eat at a fancy restaurant bear in mind fish is very expensive wherever you eat.
Athens is a stunning gem of history and culture, but it may come at a small price! Be prepared for delays, trains, ferries and trams, nothing leaves or arrives on time! You're on holiday anyway so no big deal as you can grab a coffee and a pastry and relax! The fabulous little street vendors selling authentic Greek cuisine have very long queues in the morning as the Greeks grab a bite on their way to work.
Athens has a changing climate due to its location by the Aegean sea, April and May are good months to visit not too cold and ideal for trekking. June is starting to see the heat creep up so a good time for visiting the historical sites. July, August, and September are scorching, so suncream and headwear are required! Ideal beach weather !. January through to April is freezing so wrap up warm if you go at this time of year!
