Once known as Cappella Magna, the chapel derives its name from Pope Sixtus IV, who restored it between the years 1477 and 1480. Since then, this special place has served as a location of religious as well as functionary papal activity. Today it is the hall where the papal conclave takes place, the process by which a new pope is elected.

The fame and fortune of the Sistine Chapel comes mainly from the world-renowned frescos that decorate its interior, especially the Sistine Chapel ceiling and The Last Judgment by the Tuscan sculptor and painter Michelangelo.

Meeting Point
Our meeting point is at 7:15 am on the steps near the bar caffé Vaticano (Viale Vaticano, 100) opposite side of the Vatican museums entrance.
Know Before You Go
  • If you have a metal coated pacemakers, all relevant paperwork/ID cards should be carried for security checks
  • This tour visits religious sites, and there is a dress code to be observed. Visitors must be dressed appropriately: no sleeveless blouses, no miniskirts, no shorts, and no hats are allowed.
  • The following must be left in the cloakroom: suitcases; backpacks and containers with dimensions larger than 40 x 35 x 15 centimeters; bags and packs that are cumbersome, except for small-sized bags that are carried on the shoulder and don't jut out more than 15 centimeters; any umbrella with a spike tip, and umbrellas of medium and large size; walking sticks (except those required by disabled visitors); tripods for cameras and video cameras; and signage of any kind.
  • The cloakroom staff will accept visitors’ bags and personal belongings (regardless of their form, material or dimension), with the exception of clothing items, hats, and portable umbrellas.
