Croatian War of Independence - Dubrovniks Story Tour

Overview

1991 was the worst year in history for the city of Dubrovnik. That was the first time the city was attacked and although it was severely damaged its beauty never left it.

One of the most important dates of 1991's War of Independence was St Nicola's day, December 6th, when the city was bombed for more than 10 hours continuously.

That was also the day when the Croatian army stopped the enemy army on their way to conquer the Mediterranean jewel.

The symbol of the war and the defence, stands still, on top of the hill Srdj, Fort Imperial.

This tour we will start with cable car ride to the top of the hill where we will visit the War Museum. Don't forget the handkerchiefs because what you will see up there is emotional, but what brings the tears even better is the moment you leave the museum and the tour takes you to the panoramic lookout above the town and you realize the city was brought up from the ashes just like a Phoenix would do.

This Tour will take us back to the city centre where we will take a stroll down the narrow streets of Dubrovnik and I will tell you the story on how life was under the siege.

We took the cable car up and spent some time in this really informative museum. It really was the most moving experience seeing the many photographs and the videos including news reports of the Croatian War of Independence, you could see many of the visitors were moved to tears (including myself)by the film footage. Out of all the places we visited in Dubrovnik, this had the greatest impact.

This gives a very good insight into the terrible events of the early 1990s. Lots of pictures and personal stories

We did not know exactly what to expect from this museum, however, once we were inside it seemed as if we had entered another world. The exhibits, the photos, the videos, the objects, the information provided. Very touching all.

A sophisticated museum, it was an interesting and a moving introduction to the Croatian war of independence - and specifically of the experience of the citizens of Dubrovnik.

It is really an eye-opener to go through this museum to see what happened so many years ago. There are still some ruins in places as well as you can still see bullet holes in the walls. Really gets you back into history,we were impressed.

The movies, photos, and relics of the wars show the details of the attacks on Croatia and Dubrovnik in the 1990s. I was saddened to learn more about what happened.

It shows what the Croatians and local Dubrovnik residents went through, which is a must-see for those of us who want to understand the local culture.
