Overview

Experience the confluence of the highest mountain ranges of the world: Karakoram, Himalayas and the Hindu Kush as you travel along the Karakoram Highway, reputed as the 8th wonder of the world, through the dramatic, deep gorges of the Indus: the Lion River.

Walk to the glaciers flowing down from the soaring peaks. Karakoram Highway was a joint project between Pakistan and China and took 20 years to complete. During its construction 300 Chinese and 600 Pakistani workers lost their lives.

Stop at Thalichi, the best viewpoint of Nanga Parbat (8125m) the 9th highest peak in the world.

Visit Gilgit, the capital of Pakistan’s Northern Areas and spend a free day in Karimabad with time for short walks to the Altit and Baltit forts, and for more exploration of the Hunza Valley.

There are superb views of the Karakoram Range from here - Rakaposhi 7788m, Diran 7266m, Ultar 7400m, Golden Peak 7027m, along with glimpses of the Nagar Valley.

Walk to the Ultar Glacier by following the irrigation channel through the village, or to stroll through the single-lane bazaar to enjoy more spectacular views.

Drive to upper Hunza valley and drive to Pak – China border “Khunjerab Pass” highest metal road border crossing in the world then walk to the Passu Glacier and Passu Lake.

Visit the two famous suspension bridges of Passu and Hussaini. These 800 feet long bridges over the Hunza River are still used by the local people.

What To Expect

(Daily Schedule Flight to Gilgit Fly is Subject to Weather) Morning flight to Islamabad, Pakistan’s capital city.

At the airport, you will be meeting by a Rock Valley Tours staff, then taken to your flight to Gilgit; arrive at Gilgit airport, pick up from the airport and drive to the hotel for breakfast and Freshen up.

Drive to Kargah river and visit the 7th century Buddha carved into the rock. In ancient times the Kargah Valley was used by Buddhist monks as a route to and from Taxila.

Our tour continues along the breathtaking Hunza Gojal Valley where we will be able to see the original Silk Route used by both traders and monks.

En route, we will make a short stop at the Rakaposhi (7788m) viewpoint before you drive to Karimabad before check in at the hotel.

Then a short walk to visit Altit and Baltit forts, and for more exploration of the Hunza Valley.

There are superb views of the Karakoram Range from here - Rakaposhi 7788m, Diran 7266m, Ultar 7400m, Golden Peak 7027m, along with glimpses of the Nagar Valley on the other side of the river.

You will get to meet the friendly, long-lived people of the Hunza are almost self-sufficient, growing wheat, maize, apricots and walnuts and making their own clothes, shoes, and wooden and stone bowls.

In the afternoon there will be time to walk to the Ultar Glacier by following the irrigation channel through the village, or to stroll through the single-lane bazaar to enjoy more spectacular views of the mountain peaks soaring around you. 

Then back to the hotel for an overnight stay.

Drive overland to the highest border crossing in the world at 4733m – the Khunjerab Pass between Pakistan and China.

The pass also marks the end of the Karakoram mountain range and the beginning of the Pamir Range.

We stop first at Sost, the last check post in Pakistan for customs and immigration formalities, and then continue along the Karakoram Highway beside the Khunjerab River.

At Dhee is the start of the Khunjerab National Park where sometimes one can see ibex, Marco Polo sheep and snow leopards.

After a short stay at the pass, we’ll drive back to Passu village. Passu About 70 years ago used to be the second largest settlement in Hunza after Karimabad. However, the glacier upstream on the Hunza River advanced and created a dam across the river, that later broke, washing away houses and fertile fields.

Now the river occupies most of the valley floor.

We will then take a walk to the Passu Glacier and Passu Lake (45 minutes one-way).

From the snout of the glacier, there are stunning views of Shispar (7611 m) and Passu Peak (7478 m).

In the afternoon we will visit the (800ft) suspension bridges of Passu that are still used by the local people.

Then back to the lodge for an overnight stay.

Today we take a short drive into the heart of Karakorams where we will stop at the village of Hussani. 

We then start our trek to Passu glacier, taking 4-5 hrs.

From the snout of the glacier, there are spectacular views of Shispar ( 7611m) and Passu Peak (7478m).

Our transport will meet us near Borit Lake to take us the 10km to Gulmit Gulmit, in the shadow of the unclimbed Gulmit Tower and walk through the village fields to visit the polo ground and historic houses.

After the visit to Gulmit, we will drive to Gilgit on the way to visit Attadabad lake.

Arrive at Gilgit and visit the bazaar, then overnight at the hotel.

Daily Schedule Flight to Gilgit (Flight is Subject to Weather) Breakfast at the hotel.

Transfer to Airport for Fly to Islamabad enabling us to arrive at Pindi in just one hour (miracle of science!).

In case of cancellation of flight, we shall drive by road to Islamabad - spending overnight at Besham or Narran (1-hour flight OR 7/8 hours drive).
