Stunning sights to see on the Valparaiso walking Tour

★★★★★4.6(260 reviews)Duration: 3 hours approxProduct code: 7689

Overview

Discover Valparaiso, the "Jewel of the Pacific Coast", with its colored houses and its countless hills and elevators grinding their way up steep hillsides. The heart of the old city and its funiculars (which are unique in the world)

Valparaiso is shaped as a natural amphitheater by the coast of Pacific Ocean with much of the city hanging from the hills in a disordered harmony, and material and immaterial heritage embodied in the customs, traditions and particular lifestyle of its inhabitants called "porteños".

Our guide will meet you in Plaza Sotomayor in front of the Consejo Nacional de la Cultura y las Artes (National Council for Culture and Arts).

Start with an introduction about the city, revealing its brilliant past as a commercial port which still nowadays is one of the most important in South America. Walk by the old aduana - nowadays part of the Navy Zone of the Chilean Army - and see the heritage buildings surrounding the square, all inspired in the French architecture of seventeenth century.

Climb up to Cerro Alegre and Cerro Conecpción by original funiculars - all declared national heritage - and get the best views of the city and the ocean from its viewpoints. This area was listed as World Heritage by UNESCO in 2002, for its coloured houses perched at crazy angles connected by a gigantic labyrinth of streets, long staircases and lookout points. Here you'll find plenty of boutique hotels, restaurants, bookstores and handicraft shops.

Then, descend to downtown by funiculars and explore the "old town" filled with beautiful architecture and narrow streets. End the tour by taking a trolley bus ride through the port area: this local public transport is considered a "rolling heritage", being the second oldest transportation service in South America, operating since 1952.

The trolley bus ride was unexpectedly short, only a few blocks. The Funicular was one of the old ones and took us up to the old part of town where the walking section started. This part of the tour came close to our hotel and our guide suggested that we might like to forego the last Funicular ride down to save coming back up the nearby steps. We agreed to this as we felt she was keen to go because she had something else on. This last Funicular was the oldest one in Valparaiso so we went down and back up on our own for the experience. We had covered most of the tour section prior to the tour just by wandering around on our own. The tour however did give us the history to go along with what we were seeing.

Edwin was a fantastic guide for American's visiting Valparaiso. He is from America, speaks fluent English and Spanish, knows a great deal about Valparaiso history, and has a genuine passion for the local culture. Jeff gave a thorough tour of where wanted to go and was very flexible. He was able to accommodate my mother who doesn't walk well at 65. He recommended a Thai restaurant for dinner that was fantastic.
