Jökulsárlón -The glacier lagoon

Overview

Departing from Reykjavík early morning, we have a long way ahead of us following the southern coastline passing the villages of Selfoss, Vik and Kirkjubaejarklaustur as well as Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss two much-photographed waterfalls.

Continue through the vast desert of Skeidararsandur, an area which can be prone to sandstorms. Many of Iceland‘s biggest glacial rivers run into the Atlantic Ocean off the south shore and each year they carry millions of tons of black volcanic sand, constantly altering the shape of the coastline and creating vast black deserts.

Just before reaching the lagoon, the drive passes Oraefajokull glacier, home to Iceland‘s highest peak, Hvannadalshnjukur, at 2119 m. Jokulsarlon is a stunning glacial lagoon that is constantly changing as the massive glacier tongue retreats. Icebergs of all shapes, sizes and in many hues of blue, turquoise and white, break off from the glacier and float around the lagoon.

You will have time to walk the shores of the lagoon to admire the surreal shapes and take time to photograph the lagoon‘s wonderful, mirror-like reflections. For an even closer view, you can go on a cruise aboard an amphibious vessel and sail amongst the oddly-shaped ice formations. Jokulsarlon is a natural wonder that has to be seen to be believed.

This may be one of the longest day tours from Reykjavik but it is also one of the most highly recommended.

Another enjoyable tour with THIS TOUR COMPANY. They kept me entertained throughout the tour.

‘Twas a fun group we had and Cathy was a great tour guide. Don’t forget your rain coats as this tour last stop before heading back to Rejkjavik will pass by Seljalandsfoss. You will have silly silhouette pictures behind this beautiful waterfalls and will get silly-wet after too!

Beautiful waterfalls along mist of the route. katarina was a wonderful guide. Need to advertise the length of the trip….14 hours can be a bit much for many people in a bus.

WE THOROUGHLY ENJOYED THIS FULL DAY TOUR. THANKS.

The tour was very enjoyable and well organized. This is really one of the best things about tour.

Although the longest trip we were on - roughly 14 hours - it was worth it to experience the glacier lagoon and the boat trip around the lagoon. Guide was extremely good and helped make the time go quickly.

This was easy to book, reliable, and reasonable. My guide made our tour most interesting. You can tell that he loves what he does. Not only was he a fountain of knowledge and entertaining, but he was also very caring and protective of our group. I highly recommend him for any tours. A must see!

The glacial lagoon is simply a once in a lifetime experience and a real reminder of climate change. The other stops are fairly brief and I would recommend another tour if you want to spend more time in other areas.

All the sights were stunning and unique. The only suggestion my friends and I have is transportation/vehicle comfort. The small van had very little leg space even for short people like myself who is 4’11. The 14 hr. trip would have been comfortable.
