Overview

The Venice Textile Tour Allows You to Dive Into the Venetian Artisan Tradition

During the morning, you will visit three different places presenting singular features that will bring you to a Venice of the past, among precious cloths and fabrics.

The first stop of the tour will be an ancient Venetian weaving mill, whose foundation dates back to the end of the 19th Century. Inside the building, you will find original 18th Century looms that give proof of the great tradition behind the products.

The velvets and brocades of the Venetian weaving mill are famous all over the world: they are required for the furnishing of important palaces and for collaborations with fashion houses as well as for expositions and exhibitions.

The second stop will be Palazzo Mocenigo, the Museum of Textiles and Costumes with the itineraries dedicated to Perfume. The museum will guide you to the discovery of the 17th and 18th Century Venetian style, through an itinerary dedicated to the fashion of that time. Garments and accessories are displayed to document the refinement and taste of the past centuries, together with the great ability of craftsmen of the time.

Other museum rooms are characterized by a path where the perfume is the protagonist. A video will illustrate the role of the city in the history of perfume and you will take part of a unique olfactory path.

After the visit to the museum, you will have the chance to see a truly singular shop. It was an ancient roasting shop where Giacomo Casanova stopped once, as a plaque on the wall attests.

It is a small store of cloaks and hats particularly appealing from the inside, chaotic but really unique. As you enter the store you will feel surrounded by tons of goods and by special furniture.

This was like a different world to the crammed and mobbed Venice outside, and we loved it. Do go on this tour and leave the 21st century behind you for a while. The Palazzo Mocenigo specializes in the history and making of perfume, and the displays of fine silk embroidered fabrics. There are mannequins dressed in gorgeous waistcoats and gowns, and a whole room full of silk embroidered waistcoats. You can also see other decorative original fabrics on display. The perfume bottle exhibit is absolutely wonderful, everything from ornate glass and precious metals and you also get to smell the perfumes that were favoured at the time. An excellent tour and I have to say a very good guide.

A simple and lovely 3 hour walking tour. The Palazzo Mocenigo is not really a tourist place but has a nice collection of clothing from the time of the Doges and some amazing perfume to smell. I have visited many weaving shops on my travels and this was one did not disappoint. You really got the feel of old time Italy and I highly recommend this tour.

This provided another insight into aristocratic life a couple or so centuries ago. I really enjoyed the palace with all of the beautiful waistcoats and the best part was the perfume room. This was really interesting because in parts it is interactive, for example you can smell some aromatic substances they used, read about it or watch some movies.

I was very unsure about booking this tour as I have never been on a textile tour before. The weaving mill was good and you got a feel of what life was like in the 18th century. When we arrived at the Palazzo Mocenigo I was really impressed. There was a fascinating collection of historic textiles, costumes and embroidery and the palace itself is lovely. The guide made this tour very enjoyable. She was friendly and polite. I enjoyed the perfume room and smelling all of the scents.

A walking tour with a difference! This would not be our usual choice of tour to take but we thought we would give it a try. We enjoyed the Weaving mill but the Palazzo Mocenigo was really fascinating. The perfume section was amazing and you are allowed to sniff the various ingredients. The 18th Century men’s waistcoats and Venetian cloaks were beautifully crafted and I have to say this was a surprising gem of a tour to find.
