Overview

The roads of the Dolomites, with many Passes and heights above 2,000 meters, offer great views of these beautiful mountains. For many people these mountains are the most beautiful in the world, surely the Dolomites are the most magnificent in Europe: in any case are absolutely unique!

The Great Dolomites Road, built in 1909, runs through the Dolomites from Bolzano to Cortina d’Ampezzo.

Departure from Bolzano, the Gateway to the Dolomites, capital of the province South Tyrol. We will cross the Ega Valley that begins at Bolzano and runs eastward between the Rosengarten and the Latemar mountains. This road was built in 1895 when the territory was part of the Austro Hungarian Empire. Part of the route is located in a canyon carved by the river Ega. We will stop at Carezza Lake, the most beautiful lake of the Dolomites: 30 minutes of staying with a walk around the lake if you want;

Then we will arrive at Costalunga Pass. Near the Pass, we will see the historical “Grand Hotel Carezza”, built in 1893. This was the first luxury hotel in the Dolomites which hosted very important guests like the Empress Sissi, Winston Churchill, Agatha Christie;

From the Costalunga Pass, we will reach the Fassa Valley in Trentino: we will pass through the towns of Vigo di Fassa and Canazei to arrive under the imposing peaks of the Sella Group.

From here begins a long series of 27 hairpins bends (switchbacks) that will lead us to the famous Pordoi Pass at an altitude of 2.239 meters above sea level. Stay for one hour if you decide to arrive with the cable car to Sass Pordoi (altitude of 2950 meters: the cable car is open from late May until mid-October and from Christmas to Easter);

From the Pordoi Pass we return a few kilometres to reach the Sella Pass: here the landscape is really impressive with the Sella vertical walls that stand right in front of us... From the Sella Pass we can admire the Marmolada glacier (3,343 m) and the majestic Sassolungo (3,181 m), the most famous mountain in Gardena Valley: 10 minutes stop for photos;

Coming down from the Sella Pass we will enter the Gardena Valley, the best-known tourist valley of the Dolomites. We will spend at least one hour in its largest town, the beautiful Ortisei for lunch break and visit the town;

From Ortisei, in less than an hour, we'll be back in Bolzano.

I went to Italy with my partner to celebrate my 50th birthday. We started our trip in Trento, the city my great-grandfather was born. I did not know what to expect, but I knew that there is so much history in the area. We decided to do this day tour to the Dolomites with Alessandro and for me, it would be just another full day of beautiful sites to visit. But, I was wrong. Alessandro is not just a tour guide. He knows how to take you to another level, making your experience unique and unforgettable.

This private tour was one of the best experiences of my life. Alessandro was 100 committed to making us enjoy every single site, town, and historic places we visited. He took us to unexpected gorgeous places like the Rosengarten lake. Being there was like watching a live artwork made by Mother Nature incredible views from different angles of the very blue lake with the Alps in the back. Alessandro historic knowledge is unprecedented and beyond any expectation. I have been in many beautiful places around the world, but Alessandro is such a great guy that made Dolomites tour our favourite experience ever.

We were so excited about what we saw and what we learned through Alessandro that we will definitely come back for another tour with him. The history of Trentino area and the Dolomites is already rich and beautiful, but it is only one of a kind experience, very unique, with the right tour guide. I recommend Alessandro 100. Thank you, Alessandro, for such a great time.

There is only one way to see the dazzling Dolomites: and this is by taking this Great Dolomites Road tour that takes in all the beauty and majesty of this area that is not world famous for anything. And when you have a guide like Aleksander who is a font of information that is interesting and never boring, the day is complete. The driver will pick you up at your hotel in Bolzano and drop you off at the same place. He is not the sort of bloke who would do his six or seven hours and say ciao but would go the extra mile to make sure that you miss nothing. All in all, it was one hell of a day and one that my wife and I will not forget in a hurry.

One tip: make sure you have an extra battery in your camera because you'll be seeing a million-dollar view every five minutes.

Our trip to northern Italy and the Sud Tryol was made complete with this fantastic car tour. Our driver Alex is a native Italian who loves his home region, and who seems to really enjoy showing others why the Dolomites are one of the most beautiful places on earth. Every minute of the six-hour-plus tour was interesting - the time just flew by! Our understanding of the area was so enhanced by having a chance to talk to such an engaging person. The scenery was spectacular going up the mountain, on top, and coming down through the beautiful Gardena countryside. We had much more access to the area than we would have ever had on our own. The pick-up and drop-off at our Balzano hotel were very convenient and accommodating.

This tour was truly money-well-spent for our group of three. I would highly recommend it, especially those travellers relying on public transportation during their stay in Italy. Thank you Alex!

The Perfect Trip to the Dolomites, cannot recommend highly enough this trip to anyone looking to witness the beautiful Dolomites and their surrounding nature. For an extremely reasonable price, Alessandro was an incredibly friendly and knowledgeable tour guide who escorted us around some of the most beautiful sites in the Dolomite mountain range. Picking us up and dropping us back at our accommodation was a lovely touch also worth noting. Our six hours with Alessandro was the perfect day and we can't thank him enough for his excellent private tour.

Alex did a great job introducing us to the Dolomites. Picked us up in Bolzano at our hotel. He's a native of the area, so could give us a lot of local knowledge. He took us to some beautiful sites and even gave us time to take the cable car to the top and have lunch there. I would highly recommend this tour as an introduction to the area. He gave us some excellent ideas on the place to eat and things to see on our own the next day.

Words cannot describe the amazing experience we had on our tour of the Dolomites with Alex. He is an encyclopedia of knowledge of the area and his passion for these magnificent mountains is amazing. He picked us up at our hotel at the scheduled time and from the minute we sat in the car we felt at home with this man who was as excited about the adventure as we were. He guided us to all the picturesque photo spots and nothing was a problem for him. Murray and I will definitely recommend this fabulous tour to all our friends and highly recommend it to anybody who wants to see the Dolomites with someone who takes the time and care to share the beauty of the area.

We can say with 100 certainty that it was worth every penny. This tour was amazing. It was exactly as the description provides and so much more. The tour guide Alex is a pleasure to work with and is extremely knowledgeable about the area. He knew when to stick to the schedule and when to improvise based on our preferences. He was very thorough and pleasant.

We had so much fun chatting with him and he served as a great photographer, knowing all the best locations for the best photos!

We arranged the pickup at our hotel instead of Bolzano, which our guide accommodated without hesitation despite our hotel is about half an hour from Bolzano. Later, following the tour, he dropped us in Bolzano so we could explore the tour. He was then SO KIND to pick us back up after we enjoyed the city for a few hours and complete the drive back to our hotel so we did not have to take the train/taxi back to our hotel near Merano.

It was completely out of the realm of his duties as a tour guide and we could not be more grateful to him for that! The Dolomite region is exquisite and is something everyone should see if they are in the Bolzano, Merano, South Tyrol region. Following this tour, we're already trying to plan our next trip back so that we can ski and enjoy some of the villages that Alex showed us.

Definitely, book this tour, you won't regret it!!!

As 2 seniors from Sydney Australia who took this tour in August 2017, we fully agree with the positive reviews of others. We happened to go on a Wednesday not realising this was holiday time and how much traffic there might be and also that one of the passes would be closed, but this did not faze Alex. He was such a patient competent driver and took us around the long way which added to our trip.

The scenery was fantastic. It was so nice to leave the driving to someone else so we could take everything in and take numerous photos. Alex is very fluent in English, has an easy-going nature, is very enthusiastic, has great knowledge of the local area and its history and is very thorough and likeable. He even contacted us prior to the tour to confirm the pickup to ensure everything ran smoothly. All this made this tour a must do when in the Dolomites.

Many thanks, B and K
