Overview

Your Winter Adventure to the highlands begins when you embark on the Gray Line Super Jeep in Reykjavík.

Modified for Iceland’s off-road tracks and rugged terrain, a Super Jeep is the most thrilling way to journey across the land of fire and ice.

First, you will go to the Golden Circle to the Thingvellir National Park a UNESCO heritage sites.

Then you will go to the Geysir geothermal area where we’ll visit The Great Geysir. While it is no longer active, little brother Strokkur reliably ejects scalding water towards the sky.

Gullfoss Waterfall or the ‘Golden Waterfall’ in the Hvítá river is our third stop. This breathtaking waterfall is strikingly beautiful when 'wearing its winter coat’ covered in snow and ice.

we will then head for the Highlands and as we drive through the rugged terrain glaciers and ancient volcanoes will surround us.

On the second day, we will go to the Hveravellir Nature Reserve one of Iceland's best-kept secret.

With several hiking trails through the geothermal area leading to an 8,000-year-old lava field and a cave that was home to the infamous outlaw Fjalla-Eyvindur in the 1700s.

Itinerary
Days

After departing from the city, our first stop is Thingvellir National Park—a landmark rich in historical, cultural and geological significance, and a designated UNESCO World Heritage site.

It is here that the Icelandic parliament was established in 930 AD and the ideal spot to see where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates are slowly moving apart, creating a breathtaking rift valley.

Geysir geothermal area is next where we’ll visit The Great Geysir. While it is no longer active, little brother Strokkur reliably ejects scalding water towards the sky every 5 to 10 minutes.

Gullfoss Waterfall or the ‘Golden Waterfall’ in the Hvítá river is our third stop. This breathtaking waterfall is strikingly beautiful when 'wearing its winter coat’ covered in snow and ice.

From Gullfoss we will head for the highlands via route F35—a road typically closed to regular traffic in the winter due to snow but accessible to those in 4x4 Super Jeeps.

As we drive through the rugged terrain with our powerful vehicle, glaciers and ancient volcanoes will surround us in the otherworldly landscape of the highlands.

We will make several stops along the way to take photos, and before you know it, we will arrive safely at our destination thanks to our experienced driver and guide.

Once there, a warm cabin and even warmer natural pool await you.

Hveravellir nature reserve may be one of Iceland’s best-kept secrets with the naturally heated pool, the surrounding picturesque valley and on-site restaurant featuring local Icelandic fare, to enjoy at your leisure.

With several hiking trails through the geothermal area leading to an 8,000-year-old lava field and a cave that was home to the infamous outlaw Fjalla-Eyvindur in the 1700s, there is no shortage of interesting landmarks to explore on foot.

The weather in the highlands can be unpredictable but no matter the elements, there are several options for activities at Hveravellir.

After enjoying the breakfast buffet, you are free to explore the beauty of the area throughout the day: enjoy more time in the natural pool; go on a snowshoeing hike and check out the cave of the outlaws; hang out in the cabin cozied up with your favourite book and a cup of hot chocolate; or just take in the natural energy coursing through the earth in this magical place.

Should the weather be clear enough for the Northern Lights to appear at night, you are welcome to enjoy the unique experience of admiring them from the natural pool or during a night hike. However, as they are a naturally occurring phenomenon, they are not guaranteed.
