Overview

See the evolution of the Ile-de-la-City, the historic heart of Paris, while you visit the archaeological crypt at your leisure!

Experience the heart of Paris with an enthusiastic guided tour of the magnificent Notre Dame Cathedral and the archaeological crypt located under the church square on the Ile-de-la-Cité.

You will be invited to join our PARISCityVISION guide in front of the statue of Charlemagne at Place Jean-Paul II in front of Notre Dame Cathedral. The cathedral with its flamboyant gothic style is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is not to be missed during your visit to Paris. Our guide will begin their remarks by showing you the incredible facade of this religious building. They will point out the bas-reliefs that decorate the three doors, representing religious scenes. Above the main door, a magnificent rose dominates the structure.

Our guide will give you priority access to enter the church quickly and easily. You will then feel the peace that reigns in this cathedral, where silence is required out of respect for the place. Admire the cathedral's unconditional beauty, with the stained glass windows, let the light shine through to illuminate the shadows. You will be impressed by the central nave lined with high stained glass windows that give the aisle a majestic touch. Our guide will lead you through the side aisles where a number of chapels are located. They will explain the history and legends of Notre Dame and show you the key points that contribute to the cathedral's reputation.

At the back of the church, you can peek into the chapel where the relics of the crown of thorns are kept. Above each of the transepts, you can see magnificent roses.

After the guided tour of the cathedral, our guide will take you down into the crypt, fitted out in 1980, where you can explore the 2000 years of history of the Ile-de-la-Cité, the historic heart of Paris. They will give you your tickets and share a bit of information before letting you visit the crypt at your leisure. You will then discover the archaeological vestiges that explain the Ile-de-la-Cité's urban and architectural evolution. You will see the various buildings that were built throughout the centuries on the Ile-de-la-Cité since antiquity until the 20th century: The port of ancient Lutetia, Gallo-Roman public baths, a city wall from the early 4th century.

I really enjoyed my visit here and felt like I came away with a much better understanding of the Roman city of Lutece upon which Paris was founded as well as medieval and 19th-century Paris. You are actually looking at the archaeological remains on the site under the plaza in front of Notre Dame. There are several recreations showing what the city looked like at different points in history.

A wonderful surprise! I’ve visited Paris a number of times and never gone to this historic site. Beneath the courtyard of Notre Dame is a small but fascinating display of Roman and medieval ruins uncovered during some construction. The museum was well laid out and gives one a better understanding of the depth of history on which Paris is built. It was a highlight for both myself and my 14-year-old Godson. The astonishing thing, however, was the thousands of tourists in line to see the interior of Notre Dame, and right at their feet was a treasure that was virtually empty of people

This place located right by Notre Dame Cathedral, which is already impressive, is a trip back to Roman times! What an experience. It was not busy so we were able to enjoy all the pieces of history included in it. This is a must see! Enjoy.

This place is very well put together, the way things are explained and the amount of information given in an interactive way so it’s not so overwhelming is great. The remains of the structure in the fruit itself are also mind-boggling when you consider the age of them!

We really found this archaeological find fascinating. So much little-known history has been uncovered here. We are used to seeing images of Notre Dame, but to see how many humans inhabited the foreground of the Cathedral is astounding. Interspersed with the dig site and displays of ancient artefacts is an outstanding collection of coins retrieved during the dig. The actual coins are on display, along with a blown up picture of each coin and an explanation, not just of the particular coin, but of coinage at the time, and what was happening in history to effect changes in the images on the coins. I learned a lot exploring the many different coins throughout the crypt. An unexpected find to enjoy along with the awe-inspiring Notre Dame Cathedral!

If you are visiting Notre-Dame then the crypt is well worth a visit. Some good ruins and artefacts are here, with a lot of information. It doesn't take long to get around but it is very interesting. I would say make sure you've got a bottle of water as it can get warm in here.

We were going to see the Notre Dam and that is quite a sight in itself. The crypt contains a museum that holds an exhibit of foundations of Paris under Notre Dam, coin history and some history of Paris itself. Good value visit in our option.
