Tachogang Lhakhang Bridge
1 The amazing story of this 15th-century iron bridge is sure to capture your imagination taking you back to a bygone era. The original swing bridge lives side by side with its modern successor, the breathtaking mountain and river scenery is truly stunning. Cross the bridge to reach the temples with their prayer flags and wheels and breath in the peace and tranquillity of the area. Stunning place for trekking and passing a few hours.
Rinpung Dzong
2 One of the best examples of Bhutanese architecture this Buddhist fortress and monastery is built on a steep hillside. The town is over-shadowed by the massive buttressed walls that are visible from the whole valley below. Home now to a monastic body, unfortunately, most of the chapels are closed now, but stunning views are well worth a visit. Don’t miss the great festival tour in March with holy processions and traditional mask dance.
Kyichu Lhakhang Temple
3 Legend has it this temple and over 108 similar ones were built on the site where a monstrous female lay across the country to prevent Buddhism from spreading. Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan's most beautiful and oldest temples, is said to be built on the site of her left foot. It is also believed a Buddhist master visited and concealed many spiritual treasures so come be amazed on a guided private tour.
National Museum of Bhutan
4 Built originally as a watchtower to protect from invasions this unusually shaped building is home to paintings, bronze statues and crafts spanning 1500 years of cultural history. Shaped like a large cylinder spiralling down six floors it was originally used not only for soldiers but for war prisoners too. After being neglected and in a serious state of disrepair the king ordered it be renovated and turned into a museum by the government.
Jangtsa Dumtseg Lhakhang
5 At the foothills between Paro and Dopchari this Chorten style temple or shrine has three floors depicting heaven hell and earth and is reached by various ladders. Built by the self-proclaimed Iron Man, due to his construction of over 50 iron suspension bridges, it houses some of Bhutan's finest murals and paintings. A fine example of one of the only a handful of shrines built to this design remaining in the whole of Bhutan.
Chele La Pass
6 Chele La Trek is ranked as a moderate to difficult adventure and is perfect for those who wish to experience the high Himalayas. It starts from the Haa valley and winds its way up the past Paro and way up to the snow capped mountains. It is definitely a fantastic tour where you can marvel at the stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys while watching the famous Himalayan yaks grazing in the distant horizon!
Drukgyel Dzong
7 This has to be one of the most spectacular sights in Bhutan, a tour here is a must whilst visiting this amazing country. The man power it must have taken to build something so extraordinary is surreal considering it takes nearly 3 hours to get to the top! Although it burned down and is mainly rubble, it is still worth the trek for the fabulous views down the valley.A new one has now since been built close to the city and the Kings Palace
Dzongdrakha Temple
8 The most original dzong, as most of them, have suffered from fire damage in the past, this one hasn't as is quite beautiful to see the wood carvings, the floors and wall murals just ooze history. It is extremely well maintained and is situated in a quiet corner near the river. The security may ask for passports before entry so take these with you. You will not be disappointed after visiting this stunningly beautiful monastry.
Paro Taktsang/ Tiger's Nest Trekking Tours
9 A major trek past the peace flags up the winding mountain towards the Tigers Nest. First built in 1692 it dates back to the 8th century. It is literally hanging off the cliffside! It can take up to 3 hours to walk to the top, but the view alone is worth it let alone the inside of the monastery which comprises of many chambers and prayer rooms. Inside the silence is overwhelming, oh to be a monk.
